The benefits of the last two verses of Surah Al Baqarah

As Muslims seeking the pleasure of our Lord, we love to learn Quran online and read and listen to the Quran as often as possible. Among the most beneficial surahs and the richest in teachings, we find Surah Baqara, the second surah of the Mushaf. Within it, several verses are to be meditated on and contain immense merits, such as the last two, beginning with “Amana rassoul.” Let’s take a closer look at the benefits of this Quranic passage that benefits everyone.

The last two verses of Surah Al Baqarah

In the Holy Quran, the Book of Allah revealed to the last of the Prophets and Messengers, Muhammad ﷺ, appears in second position in Surah Al Baqarah. This Quranic surah is also one of the longest surahs. Its last two verses, recited by millions of Muslims around the world, are as follows. According to a translation of the meanings of verses 285 and 286:
{The Messenger believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and so did the believers. All believe in Allah, His Angels, His Books, and His Messengers; [the believers] say: “We make no distinction between His messengers. We heard and obeyed. Lord, grant us Your forgiveness. It is to You that [all things] return.” / Allah imposes on no one only what he is capable of. [Good] done will be to his advantage, and [evil] done to his detriment. [Say:] “Lord! Do not chastise us for our forgetfulness or mistakes. Lord! Do not burden us with a heavy burden similar to that with which You burdened those who came before us. Lord! Do not burden us with what we cannot bear! Forgive [our sins], cover [our faults], and have mercy on us. You are our only Master, so grant us victory over the disbelievers.”}

These two Quranic verses close Surah Al Baqarah and are, as such, nicknamed “Khawâtîm Al-Baqarah”. As you can see, this passage is rich in teaching and contains several beneficial reminders for the believer.

Among the profitable teachings of these two verses of the Quran

Among the beneficial reminders, we can cite the quotation of certain pillars of the faith. Indeed, it is said: {All believed in Allah, in His Angels, in His Books, and in His Messengers}. The exegete and scholar Ibn Kathîr explains in his Tafsîr: “The believers, therefore, believe that Allah is unique, that He is sufficient in Himself, that there is no divinity worthy of worship but Him and that there is no true Lord apart from Him. They have faith in all the Prophets, Messengers and Books sent down from heaven to the servants of Allah.”
SubhanAllah, He is Allah, the Only One worthy of Praise, the Almighty.

Furthermore, in these two verses, it is said: {You are our only Master}. Ibn Kathîr comments in his exegesis: “You are the One who takes care of us, the One who helps us. We place our trust in You, implore Your help, and rely on You. And we have strength and power only through You.”
Let us also take a closer look at two other passages from these verses that are also very rich in teaching.

“Allah imposes on no one only what he is capable of”: Meaning

When we meet a distressed person, we usually comfort them, support them, and invoke on their behalf but also remind them of this Quranic passage: {Allah imposes on no one only what they are capable of}. This is therefore an extract from the last two verses of Surah Al Baqarah. In his tafsîr, Ibn Kathîr comments on this passage as follows: {Allah imposes on no one only what he is capable of}: He does not impose on anyone what is beyond his abilities. By His leniency, His benevolence, and His beneficence towards His creatures. This Word comes to abrogate and remove what had aroused fear among the Companions in His Word: “{Whether you manifest what is in you or conceal it, Allah will call you to account.}” Moreover, shortly after, it is said: {Lord! Do not burden us with what we cannot bear.} Imam Ibn Kathir then explains in his exegesis:

{Lord! Do not burden us with what we cannot bear.} As impositions, calamities, and plagues. Do not test us with what we cannot bear. {Forgive [our sins] in what is between You and us and what You know of our shortcomings and errors. {Cover our sins} between us and Your servants. And don’t show them our faults and our evil deeds.}

These two Quranic verses close Surah Al Baqarah and are, as such, nicknamed “Khawâtîm Al-Baqarah”. As you can see, this passage is rich in teaching and contains several beneficial reminders for the believer.

The benefits of this Quranic passage

Did you also know that in the Prophetic Sunnah, we find many hadiths referring to the end of this surah?

  • Indeed, in a hadith reported by the two imams Al Bukhari and Muslim, according to Abu Mas’oud, the Prophet and Messenger of Allah (may the prayers of Allah and His salvation be upon him) said:
“Whoever recites the two verses at the end of Surah Baqara in one night, these two verses are enough for him. »

The imam and scholar Ibn Al-Qayim Al Djawziya explains this prophetic hadith: “The meaning of this, according to the most correct opinion, is that these two verses are sufficient as protection for the person against any evil that could touch her. » [Al Wabil As Sayyib p.156]

  • Furthermore, in another hadith, the Prophet, Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa salam, said: “I was given these verses which end Surah Al Baqarah coming from a treasure under the Throne which were not given to any Prophet before me. ” [Sahih Al Jâmi’, Al Albani].
  • In his tafsîr (exegesis), the scholar and imam Ibn Kathir, may Allah have mercy on him, also cites the following hadith reported by Muslims:
“’Abd Allah relates that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was made to complete the night journey, he was brought to the jujube tree of the limit which is in the seventh heaven, and to which all that rises reaches from the earth and everything that descends higher. [It was covered] by golden butterflies. And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was granted three things: “The five prayers, the last verses of Surah Al Baqarah, and the deadly sins of the members of his community who did not associate anything with Allah were forgiven.”

Thus, believers are asked to read and recite these two Quranic verses regularly. And of course, to meditate on his teachings. And we ask Allah to help us in this. He is certainly capable of anything.
