Qunoot-e-Nazilah – A Strong Dua in Times of Suffering

Qunoot-e-Nazilah is a special prayer that takes a prominent position in Islamic practice. Muslims particularly offer it during periods of trials, disasters, war, oppression, or affliction on the Muslim Ummah. This dua is a reflection of the supplication of a believer to Allah for protection, justice, and mercy under the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

In this detailed guide, we’ll explore the meaning, history, when to recite, how to recite, and translations of Qunoot-e-Nazilah in English, Urdu, Hindi, and Arabic, all based on authentic Hadith.

What is Qunoot-e-Nazilah?

The Arabic term “Qunoot” denotes humility, submission, or supplication, and “Nazilah” refers to calamity or disaster. Qunoot-e-Nazilah is thus a dua that Muslims recite in prayer as a response to great trials that afflict them.

It is a Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ performed when the Muslim Ummah was distressed, betrayed, or under attack. Qunoot-e-Nazilah is different from normal dua-e-qunoot (recited in Witr), recited on any of the five prayers during the last rak’ah while rising from Ruku (bowing) before proceeding to sujood (prostration).

Historical Background

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to recite the revealed “Qunoot” in times of hardship. For instance, after the tragic massacre of 70 Sahabah in the incident of Bi’r Ma‘unah, Prophet ﷺ made dua against the tribes of Ri’l, Dhakwan, and Usayyah who betrayed the Muslims.

Hadith Reference:

Ibn Abbas reported: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ invoked Qunoot for a whole month in Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr prayers…”
(Abu Dawood, Sahih)

It was afterwards followed by the rightly guided Caliphs, particularly Umar ibn Al-Khattab, who used to read it publicly during afflictive moments.

When to Recite Qunoot-e-Nazilah?

Muslims do not limit Qunoot-e-Nazilah to any specific prayer. But they usually recite it in the Fajr prayer.

  • Fajr Prayer (usually in Arab nations)
  • All Five Daily Prayers (optionally in distress)
  • Whenever Muslims face oppression, natural calamities, or tragic events

The Complete Qunoot-e-Nazilah (Arabic Text)

Here is the original version of the Qunoot-e-Naazilah as recited from Umar (RA):
